CONSTRUCTION stone supplier Davies Granite and Sizane High School will hold an Aids sports day in partnership with the National Aids Council (Nac) aimed at spreading awareness of various prevention options and relating to family members living with the virus.

Davies Granite is a company that supplies stone for construction work and are the major supplier of road stone to government departments.

The company’s Ben Louw and Veronica Stanley initiated the concept of raising funds for those that lost loved ones to HIV and Aids around the Sizane High School community in Pelandaba.

The inaugural games were held in July 2008, with six teams competing in three sporting disciplines, soccer, netball and tug of war.

This year’s games will include soccer, darts, netball, tug of war, volleyball and chess.

Stanley, who is also the Matabeleland Aids Council liaison officer, said she was happy that the number of participating teams had increased.

“We started with two teams, but this being our 10th year we now have 14 teams participating in soccer. This is exciting and gives me pleasure and great joy to help fight the HIV and Aids stigma for the past 10 years,” said Stanley.

“In 2010 and 2011 Davis Granite won the best HIV and Aids awareness trophy at the workplace in Matabeleland at the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) awards.”

She said money generated from the sale of food and team registration is given to Sizane High, which buys school uniforms and pays fees for the orphaned children at the school.

“A few government departments have come on board to participate in a few sporting disciplines and also provide some service providers and hand out information on male circumcision,” Stanley said. – @DecoDecent2
