Students plot Chiefs Heist John Zhuwawo

HERENTALS are leaving no stone unturned in their bid to upset Bulawayo Chiefs and be crowned Champions of the Chibuku Super Cup at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday.

The Students acknowledged they will go into the game seemingly as the underdogs, but this being a cup competition it’s never about history but rising to the occasion on the day.

Herentals’ last trip to Bulawayo was for a date with Bulawayo Chiefs and they lost that encounter 2-1 at Luveve Stadium on October 30.

It was termed the Chibuku Cup final dress rehearsal but Herentals striker Blessing Majarira says that will count for nothing come Sunday.

“This is a big game. A tricky one. We will not underestimate Bulawayo Chiefs just because we beat FC Platinum in the semi-finals. They beat us in the league recently but that will not matter on Sunday,” said Majarira.

“Cup games are different from league games and this is our first meeting in a league game and our league history will not matter. Winning a cup is something that every player cherishes. Every player wants a medal to show for their efforts when they retire. We cannot wait for Sunday, which is an opportunity to make history,” said Majarira.

His comments were echoed by forward John Zhuwawo.

“We are preparing well and the goal is to bring the cup to Harare. Winning this competition is a big motivation for us as players. It will also improve us as a team. Everyone is in high spirits and fighting for that place in the starting  lineup.

“Everyone understands what is at stake. Chiefs are a good side but we will not disappoint our fans come Sunday. This is a cup game and it’s different from the league and we will fancy our chances,” said  Zhuwawo.

Bulawayo Chiefs and Herentals progressed in similar fashion. Amakhosi Amahle beat Black Rhinos 5-4 on penalties after the semifinal tie had ended goalless in regulation time. The Students overcame four times in a row league champions FC Platinum 4-3 also on spot kicks after their match had finished 1-1 after 90 minutes.

The two sides were promoted into the topflight league in 2018 and have both made history by making it into the final for the first time ever. — @innocentskizoe
