ZIMBABWE yesterday named its squad for the forthcoming African Union Sports Council Region 5 Under-20 Games as the countdown to the bi-annual sporting showpiece continues.

The team goes into full time camp at Bulawayo Polytechnic tomorrow until the start of the Games on December 5 when they will then move to Hillside Teachers’ College, the designated Games Village.

Tirivashe Nheweyembwa, Team Zimbabwe deputy chef de Mission responsible for administration, said the team arrives in Bulawayo tomorrow and will be stationed here until the end of the Games.

The team was selected by coaches using various sporting platforms like the Zimbabwe National Youth Games which were held in Masvingo as well as schools competitions for various disciplines.

“We are appealing to Bulawayo to rally behind Team Zimbabwe as we bid to be ruthless in all the disciplines. We remain confident that we are going to do the nation proud. Our appeal also goes to the corporate world to continue supporting the team in cash or kind,” said Nheweyembwa.

He said they have done their part in exposing their athletes to real competitions like the recently held Gutu Half Marathon.

Team Zimbabwe will compete in eight disciplines against 10 other countries from the region.

President Mugabe is expected to officially open the Games on December 5 at Barbourfields Stadium just before Zimbabwe’s Young Mighty Warriors, coached by Sithethelelwe Sibanda, take on defending champions Zambia.
