Top 10 must-dos for regional and international guests attending ZITF

Today marks the exciting commencement of the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF), attracting a vibrant influx of regional and international attendees eager to forge deals and network with fellow entrepreneurs.

Amidst the bustling activity, beloved chef and comedian Carl Joshua Ncube has crafted a must-do guide for Bulawayo, which he enthusiastically calls the “bee’s knees!”

Here’s Carl Joshua Ncube’s list of must-do things in Bulawayo:

*1. Witness the great Zimbabwe International Trade Fair extravaganza:

The ZITF is basically Bulawayo’s economic heartbeat. It’s a massive shindig with bigwigs, embassies, and enough companies to make your head spin. Network, buy stuff, learn important things, and revel in this glorious showcase of Zimbabwean business!

*2. Explore Bulawayo with a time-travelling twist:

Bulawayo’s history is epic, so a guided tour is a must. Imagine grand colonial buildings, fantastic museums, and enough stories to fill a lifetime. You’ll practically feel like you’ve stepped into a time machine!

*3. Get your balance on in Matopos:

Matopos is a wonderland of gigantic balancing rocks, fascinating wildlife, and traditional villages where everyone seems to get along. It’s also the sacred burial ground of the Ndebele people and Cecil John Rhodes (the experience will make you relive the colonial conflict, it’s a place caught and frozen in its hectic historical past).

*4. Camp out under the Bulawayo stars:

Experience Bulawayo like a true adventurer! Pitch a tent at one of the caravan parks and wake up to the symphony of birdsong and the comforting shade of the city’s beautiful trees. Bonus points for playing pickleboard (Google it, it’s awesome!).

*5. Meet UmAfrikazi, Bulawayo’s Wonder Woman:

Sithandazile Dube

No Bulawayo adventure is complete without a legendary guide, and UmAfrikazi (real name Sithandazile Dube) is exactly that. This poetess and phenomenal hostess will show you the city’s cultural gems and share the rich history of this remarkable place.

*6. Unleash your inner artist at Mzilikazi Arts and Crafts Centre:

Mzilikazi Arts and Crafts Centre

The Mayor himself, His Worship David Coltart (say that ten times fast!), recommends the Mzilikazi Arts and Crafts Centre. Here you’ll find a treasure trove of local crafts, perfect for adding a unique touch to your souvenir collection. The Mayor has 10 other favorites and we will be doing a separate piece on His list.

*7. Become a Highlander (Just for the Game):

Sports fan or not, when you’re in Bulawayo, you’re automatically a Highlanders FC supporter. Black and white are the new black, and Barbourfields Stadium is your new home. The electric atmosphere during a game here is legendary, so don’t miss it!

*8. Indulge in meaty bliss at The Smokehouse:

Bulawayo boasts of many restaurants, but the Smokehouse deserves a standing ovation. Their fire-kissed meats, smoky chicken, and succulent ribs are pure heaven, perfectly complemented by their amazing cocktails.

*9. Chow down at a township Braai:

Bulawayo is carnivore central, and a “tshisanyama” (barbecue) is around every corner. These daytime braai spots are a vibrant slice of Bulawayo life. Personally, I recommend grabbing a drink at a township spot and savouring some “Ingwebu” (local beer) – it’s the perfect way to experience the city’s soul.

  1. A selfie with the Big Man:

There’s an amazing statue of Father Zimbabwe, Joshua Nkomo in the CBD and it’s worth getting your selfie with the Big Man.

Enjoy an incredible time in Bulawayo! Make new friends, explore everything the city has to offer, and don’t hesitate to spend a little— we love having you here!
