THE Bulawayo Basketball Association (BBA) has cancelled its entire league programme that was initially scheduled for Friday.

BBA secretary general Francis Dube told Zimpapers Sports Hub that action will resume in January.

“We advise that the fixtures have been postponed due to circumstances beyond our control. We would like to apologise to the teams that had been preparing in anticipation of these games. We will now take our mid-season break and we should be returning to action in January,” said Dube.

In the Elite League which is the top division, Legends and Southern Mavericks will go into the mid-season break as the joint leaders.

Both teams have accumulated 12 points from seven games.

Legends were at their best last weekend as they won 80-49 over Giants while South Mavericks failed to overcome Lakers Talen Vision is the weekend’s main game. The Mavericks went down 79-51.

At the break, Giants occupy position three on the six-team log with 11 points, just one behind the leaders.

Lakers occupy fourth position with 10 points while Nust and Highlanders occupy fifth and sixth position respectively. Nust has 10 points while Highlanders is on eight points.

Dube says they will be placing more emphasis on 3-on-3 basketball tournaments in the second half of the season.

“As a province, we need more action in this version of the game. We don’t want to lag behind other provinces, “said Dube.

The 3-on-3 basketball is a new version of the game played by three players a-side and scoring in one basketball hoop.

Each game is 15 minutes long or ends when one team reaches 21 points, whichever comes first.

The discipline recently became an Olympic sport and has been adopted by the African Game.
