Up-and-coming Masvingo artiste Semmah Fyah (real name Oncemore Samuel Bangwayo) says he believes artistes should not be limited to one genre as art is all about creativity.

The artiste who recently released a solo album – Party we ah Party – said he was inspired by Fungisai Zvakavapano-Mashavave who openly declared that she never wanted to be labelled a gospel musician. Mashavave who has diversified from the gospel genre with collaborations such as Zim dancehall chanter Killer T, is in the process of untangling herself from that maze, something Semmah Fyah wants to avoid.

Fyah, a 20-year-old architect who is employed in the security sector, said despite being a devoted Christian who is a member of the Zaoga Forward in Faith Church, he does not limit his artistic talent to gospel but will sing any genre.

“Amai Zvakavapano-Mashavave has inspired me to record this album which is a fusion of gospel, dancehall and reggae music. I wanted to test my creativity skills and I believe every artiste can do so as opposed to limiting themselves to one genre,” said Fyah

He said his 11-track album, produced by Masvingo based Music Factory, has tracks Rugwaro, Ndini Ndinovakunda, Woman of My Heart, Kundinyemudza, Smile Again, Usamutyire, Kumusha Kwangu, Simbarashe, Makamira Neni and title track, Party we ah Party.

Though Fyah started singing at the age of three years, he started taking music seriously when he was at Harare Polytechnic College in 2008.  “My turning point was when I attended one of Fungisai’s shows in 2008. I felt inspired and started taking music seriously.”
