SPARROWS Athletics Club’s top female sprinter Yvonne Vanhuvaone romped home to victory in the 200M and 400M events at the Bulawayo Athletics Board (BAB) track and field championships at White City Stadium yesterday. Vanhuvaone will represent Bulawayo at the Provincial Track and Field Championships next month in Harare.

She clocked 26.71 seconds in the Under-20 200M race, beating Adelaide Ndlovu of Hamilton, who clocked 27.85 sec and Sparrows’ Linety Ferera (28.03 sec).

In the 400M race, Vanhuvaone recorded 1 minute 1.36 sec. Her teammate Fortunate Chichichi was second in 1 min 4.65 sec while Mandwandwe High School’s Sisasenkosi Sibanda was third in 1 min 7.24 sec.

The Chiwanda brothers Allister and Alex dominated the men’s 100M and 200M dashes. Allister took the 100M in 11.64 sec, while Alex was second in 11.90 sec and Kudzai Gomba (12.09 sec) finished third. Alex then won the 200M in 23.67 sec, while Allister was second in 24.11 seconds and Babongile Mathole (24.37 sec) was third.

BAB chairman Manuel Mpofu urged schools to continue with their competitive spirit.

“The performance was impressive. With such enthusiasm, schools will never run dry of athletes. They’ve kept the fire burning and this year, our performance at national events should improve compared to last year,” said Mpofu.

“As a board, we’ve managed to create awareness about athletics and Bulawayo is supporting our plans. The attendance for both cross country and track and field was good and this certainly shows that athletics is alive.”

The BAB will conduct a coaches’ workshop on January 23 at White City Stadium.
