FEMALE boxers in Matabeleland North Province have been given a chance to pursue their talents after the Victoria Falls Boxing Academy pledged to support them by providing training and competitive matches to enhance their skills.

It has been noted that there are a few female boxers in the country. Very few girls have dared to step into the ring and seek to achieve success in the sport.

Boxing has historically been a male-dominated sport.

To address this disparity, the Victoria Falls Boxing Academy has initiated a campaign to motivate girls to get involved in the sport.

The Academy’s director Tobias Mupfuti told Zimpapers Sports Hub that they were on a drive to push for inclusivity in their programmes and that included the promotion of women in the sport.

The Victoria Falls Academy’s efforts in promoting gender equality and inclusion have been commendable. By encouraging young girls to participate in the sport, the academy is challenging stereotypes and empowering girls to pursue their dreams.

“These victories not only benefit the academy but also contribute to the overall development and well-being of the community. In promoting women in sport, we are contributing to nation-building as well,” said Mupfuti.

Mupfuti added that they were making progress towards initiating training camps that would promote the participation of female boxers strongly.

“The academy intends to host a series of training camps and workshops for its members. These programmes will be overseen by seasoned trainers and coaches, offering boxers a chance to improve their abilities and technique. Female boxers are invited to be part of this. He said in the meantime, they call upon young women with an interest in boxing to join their academy.

“We are a welcoming academy and we provide the ideal environment for young boxers to thrive and discover their talent more. We are not the only boxing club here, which is a testimony that the sport is growing in the city. What is needed is to spread the sport to other areas in Matabeleland North so that we give young boxers the platform to grow,” said Mupfuti.

Local boxing clubs have sprouted, attracting young men and women who are passionate.
