HIGHLANDERS are likely to cancel their End of Year Stars Awards ceremony after a lacklustre performance by the first team with a club official saying they cannot be seen to be celebrating mediocrity. Amahlolanyama were at one time firm championship favourites before an unforgettable losing streak that saw them go down to the murky relegation waters. They could have finished the season on eighth position had they not won their last match against Chapungu that saw them move up and end the season on position five.

Highlanders finished the season on 45 points, a massive 12 points behind champions Dynamos in a season where they failed to lift a single piece of silverware despite appearing in two invitational finals. Th e first was the Bob90 Super Cup where they lost 2-0 to Dynamos with the TM Supermarkets Challenge resulting in a 4-1 final loss to the Glamour Boys.

Bosso though have a perfect opportunity to avenge their avalanche of losses to DeMbare when the two giants come face to face again in the Gushungo Celebrations Cup at the giant National Sports Stadium tomorrow.

Club chief executive officer, Ndumiso Gumede, told Chronicle Sport that they presented their case to their principal sponsors BancABC, whom they met in the capital on Thursday.

“Our sponsors had a budget for that kind of a ceremony which they set at the beginning of the season but we explained to them our situation that really we can’t be seen to be celebrating mediocrity and they said they’ll come back to us,” said Gumede.

The sponsors though might want to have the awards night for their marketing purposes.

“They (BancABC) might still want to go ahead with the awards ceremony but if it was possible we’d rather honour our developmental side that did well despite playing against much older opponents in Division Two,” said Gumede.
