THE women’s basketball World Cup qualifiers which were scheduled to start on Sunday will now commence in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 8 August. Zimbabwe will be competing for the first time outside the country. They will compete against the hosts South Africa, Nigeria, Angola, Cameroon and Morocco.

The team is already in camp and had its first practice session yesterday at Freedom House.
Harare-based players are expected to join the rest of the squad today. This is because they were given time to vote in the harmonised elections.

Deliwe Moyo of Qhubeka will captain the side in South Africa and will be assisted by Gladies Chiweta of Richwood Basketball Club in Harare.
Wheelchair Basketball Zimbabwe president and coach for the women’s team Walter Ndlovu said preparations are going well so far.

“We have a good squad and we want to do wonders in South Africa, I’m positive we will do well even if it’s our first time,” said Ndlovu.
Ndlovu said they were still sourcing funding for the team to travel.

They need about $12 000.
“We are asking for the corporate world to chip in and support us.

“We are still short of funds to travel and to hire wheelchairs which are up to standard to compete in the games,” said Ndlovu.
The team is set to depart for South Africa on Monday for an event which starts next week on Thursday in the revised programme.
