AN elderly woman yesterday sued her son over maintenance for the upkeep of her eight-year-old grandchild. Shamiso Ndlovu brought Blessing Ndlovu to court demanding $120 as maintenance for her grandchild, saying that her son has not been supporting his own child since last year.
She did not disclose any details about the mother of the child but said she lived with the minor.

Shamiso told the court that she is unemployed and is renting a single room in Pumula.

Shamiso appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Tinashe Tashaya.

Blessing did not attend court to respond.

“The father of the child in question is my first born son who is a soldier in the Air Force. He last sent money for the upkeep of his child last year when the child was in Grade One and that’s when he last visited us,” Shamiso said.

“He used to send money for me and his child but ever since he got married and sired two children he has not been providing us with anything. He’s staying at Manyame base at the moment.”

She added that she wanted her son to attend the court hearing adding that she was going to accept anything that he had to offer.

“All I want is for my grandchild to benefit from his father because I’ve been struggling to do that all alone. I want to use the money to cater for my grandchild’s school expenses and pay our rentals and buy food,” she said.

Magistrate Tashaya ordered Blessing to pay $100 every month, in absentia, and advised Shamiso to come back to court and have Blessing arrested if he fails to pay the maintenance money.
