Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has hit back at Steven Gerrard’s claims he warned former team-mate Luis Suarez away from the Gunners because he was “too good” for the club. Liverpool skipper Gerrard told Suarez last summer not to join Arsenal because his dream was to play for Real Madrid or Barcelona, but Wenger has reacted with a simple message for the midfielder.

“You are never too good for Arsenal and Gerrard knows that,” said Wenger yesterday.
Suarez, 27, completed a £75million move to the Nou Camp last month on the back of his fine season for the Reds and his former captain Gerrard believes he was always destined to seal a move to Barcelona.

Gerrard had previously said: “Last summer, when Luis was out in the cold and training on his own, I told him ‘Don’t go to Arsenal’.
“With all due respect to them, I told him he was too good for Arsenal.
“Luis’ dream, from the first day he came to us, was to play for Real Madrid or Barcelona.

“I said ‘If you score 30 goals for us and win the PFA Player of the Year, the Footballer of the Year’ – I knew he was going to win them – ‘they will come back for you”.’
But Wenger has built further confidence in his Gunners side with the arrival of Barcelona and Chile star Alexis Sanchez, saying Arsenal are close to winning the title.
When asked what lessons he learned from last season, Wenger said: “That we were close to winning the Premier League.

“Our belief has grown and we had too many injuries in the most important part of the season.” — Dailymail
