ZIMBABWE Cricket (ZC) and the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture held a three-day coaching workshop at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo as part of efforts to revive cricket at the grassroots.

The course was attended by 24 participants comprising district, ward and community coaches.

Provincial Sport Officer Rita Kutsirayi said: “Basically we are taking cricket to the grassroots where we have targeted all district, community and ward coaches. The Honourable Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Makhosini Hlongwane saw it fit that cricket be introduced at grassroots level.

“The idea is that those we train must go and impart their knowledge to their communities. We expect these guys to conduct workshops and training courses in their communities. From there they will have to form clubs that they will take charge of. This will ensure that cricket is played all over the city.

At that point we will then need the corporate world to come in and help us spread this initiative.”

The coaching workshop was conducted by Francis Rashikayi, ZC rural cricket manager.

“This has been a very successful workshop. I am very impressed with the way the participants grasped the concepts we have taught them. They have shown eagerness to learn and from here we are certain our cricket has a bright future,” said Rashikayi.
