ZPC Hwange successfully orchestrated Amagagasi’s first loss of the season by electrocuting the Victoria Falls-based side 1-0 in a Zifa Southern Region Division One League match on Saturday.

Amagagasi’s attempt to stretch their unbeaten run to 12 games came to a screeching halt when defender Preference Mpofu turned the ball into his own net in the dying stages of the game to give ZPC Hwange maximum points.

Despite losing to the third-placed electricity generators, Amagagasi remained at the top of the table with 29 points from 12 games. The Victoria Falls side now enjoys a two point lead over Bantu Rovers, who were inactive and have a game in hand.

ZPC Hwange’s victory pushed them within title chasing distance with 26 points from 13 outings.

Amagagasi coach Zibonele Ncube rued his side’s missed chances, but was hopeful that they would recover from the loss.

“It was a balanced game; we missed lots of chances as we hit the frame of the goal three times. Nhlanhla Ndlovu, Jimu Muli and Mutsa Gwara all took turns to fluff scoring opportunities, but such is the game of football.

“I’ve told my boys to soldier on because in football there are three results, a win, draw or defeat and it’s unfortunate that we lost,” said Ncube.

Rovers can dislodge the leaders should they win their outstanding encounter against ZRP Hwange.

Black Boots, who are fourth on 21 points after 13 games, trail Amagagasi by eight points following their 1-0 away win at Makomo.

Bulawayo Chiefs’ championship hopes suffered a minor setback when they were held 0-0 by Victoria Falls Tigers in the resort town.

Chiefs are now fifth with 18 points from nine matches.
