ALL is set for the 2016 edition of the Kamandama Memorial Fundraising Golf tournament to be held at the Hwange Golf course on Sunday. According to the club captain Artwell Ndebele, at least 120 golfers are expected to descend on Hwange for the tournament. “The stage is now set for this important day on our golf calendar as golfers tee off for a noble cause as a way of fundraising towards the welfare of the widows and dependants of the victims of the mine disaster.

‘‘We’re expecting a field of around 120 players. For the people coming down to Hwange for the first time, it’s a perfect opportunity to learn about the history of the Kamandama disaster.” said Ndebele on the sidelines of an organising committee meeting at the clubhouse last Friday.

Ndebele said a four-ball, better-ball scoring format would be used. “We’re having a four-ball better ball which will consist of two teams of two golf players competing directly against each other. We’ll also have players from Zambia, South Africa and Botswana,” he said.

From the local stable, a lot will be expected from the recently held Hwange Closed tournament championship division winner Vumbu Ncube but he must expect competition from the likes of captain Ndebele, Edwin Moyo, Christian Lungu, Amos Lungu, Kenny Maunga, Matabeleland Golf Association president Victor Suerga and Pascal Sibanda to mention a few.

The B Division winner under the same tournament Didymus Ngorora is also expected to give other golfers a run for their money and so is C Division top player Victor Rakabopa. Club president Thomas Makore is also part of the playing field and is expected to prove his mettle among other captains of industry on the greens.

In the ladies category, competition will revolve around the likes of Shelly Gwanonga, ladies captain Matron Mguni, Colleta Mhonda, Prisca Chimukoko, Terry Tshamala, Colleen Rakabopa, Tsitsi Mulenga and Hwange Golf Club junior product Mehluko Sibanda to mention a few.

In a separate interview, the new chairman of the Hwange Golf Club, Bongani Ndlovu, also an avid golfer, echoed Ndebele’s sentiments and said its all systems go as they were aiming to reach a target of $ 20,000.

“As a committee, we’re working flat out to prepare for this charitable fundraising tournament to raise funds for the Kamandama Widows Trust Fund and our target is $20,000. The support by our various partners is critical for us to realise this dream of changing the lives of the dependants of this mine disaster,” said Ndlovu.

Last year, the tournament was won by Rabson Dumani and Shelly Gwanonga with a tally of 52 points. On second position were Vumi Moyo and Prisca Utete with 50 points while the pairing of 17-year-old Sharon Gurani and Vumbu Ncube came third at 49 points.
