VICTORIA Falls-based Zifa Southern Region League club Amagagasi maintained their 100 percent winning record and shot to the top of the table following a 1-0 home win over new boys Talen Vision. Attacking midfielder Arthur Musiiwa scored the solitary goal at Chinotimba Stadium to hand his side maximum points.

Despite taking their points tally to 12 from four games and opening a two-point lead over fellow contenders Bulawayo Chiefs, Amagagasi have chosen to remain modest, with their chairman Sam Sibanda saying they are only building a foundation to launch a title chase next season.

“What we know is that teams will find it difficult to beat us this season because we’ve assembled a good side and the players are beginning to understand the coach’s philosophy,” said Sibanda.

“As a club we gave ourselves a target of winning the championship in our third year and should it happen this season, which is our second in Division One, we will grab that opportunity. Another thing that we credit for our good start is that the club management has been together for a while and we understand each other very well, which makes it easy for us to run the club,” he said.

Amagagasi is coached by Chinotimba Primary School teacher Zibonele Ncube and are largely driven by defender Bekithemba Moyo, anchorman Trevor Nkomo, attacking midfielders Musiiwa and Njabulo Malala as well as striker Nhlanhla Ndlovu, among other players.

Should they continue with their form, the Victoria Falls side is expected to compete for the championship with the likes of former champions Chiefs, ZPC Hwange, Technosphere and Bantu Rovers.

Chiefs were toppled from the top spot by Amagagasi after drawing 1-1 away to third-placed ZPC Hwange. Chiefs, who are unbeaten in four games, are on 10 points, two more than ZPC Hwange.

Bantu Rovers and Technosphere won their respective matches by identical 1-0 scorelines against Black Boots and Casmyn respectively.

Rovers’ coach Johannes Ngodzo, whose side had been inactive for two consecutive weeks as they had been drawn against ousted Quelaton and Trumus, was happy with the victory.

“At this stage of the season, you don’t want to stay far behind the table toppers and we accumulated rust in those two weekends because of inactivity. However, I’m happy that we managed to win on our return and we can only improve from here,” said Ngodzo.

Rovers will be involved in a mid-week away game against Makomo in Hwange on Thursday, knowing that a victory will push them to sixth from their present 11th.

Makomo, who are coached by former Highlanders’ striker Tapela Ngwenya, sit in 12th place on the table, with three points after beating ZRP Hwange 1-0 at the weekend.
