HIGHLANDERS star midfielder Peter “Rio” Moyo was arrested on Wednesday for driving without a driver’s licence while on his way to the team’s training session. The Bosso playmaker missed the Wednesday afternoon training session after being detained for driving his Toyota March without proper documents.

Sources close to the club told Chronicle Sports that Moyo was stopped near Mzilikazi suburb while on his way to training at St Columba’s High School where Highlanders conducted their practice session.

“Rio was arrested yesterday (Wednesday) for driving without a licence. He spent the whole afternoon with police who were refusing to release him until he produces a licence, so that’s why he missed practice,” said the source.

Highlanders chairman Peter Dube said he had not received information about the arrest of one of his star players.

“It’s news to me which I am interested in. I haven’t received the report yet, so I cannot comment further. I have to wait for information to reach me through proper channels,” he said.

Dube said there was no action that Bosso could take over a player’s conduct outside their confines though they encourage positive moral practices.

“They are human beings just like me and you, so we can’t do anything about it,” he said.

It is alleged that most Highlanders stars are driving without licences as they hide behind their popularity that sees police officers wave them past road blocks.

Star midfielder Kuda Mahachi was also caught driving without a licence last year. Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo confirmed the incident.

“Yes he was arrested for driving without a licence, but we later released him as we demanded he should produce it. The law gives him seven days to produce it, failure to do that, we will have to apprehend him for breaching the law and charge him accordingly,” he said.

Peter Moyo denied knowledge of the issue and declined to reveal whether he had a valid driver’s licence.
