ZIFA Southern Region Division One pacesetters Bulawayo City are now 12 points from claiming their maiden championship title after brushing off Amagagasi FC 1-0 in Victoria Falls on Saturday.

The result saw City stretching their lead at the top to seven points with nine games remaining after their nearest rivals Bulawayo Chiefs dropped yet another two valuable points when they were held 1-1 by Technosphere in Hwange.

City’s goal came from Qinani Sibanda and club chairman Jerry Sibanda was happy with the result although he said there was still a long way to go before they can be crowned champions.

“We played very well over the weekend despite us travelling to the match late. The boys showed great character with the win and I believe that more is still to come from the team,” said Sibanda.

“We’ve stretched our lead at the top but that doesn’t guarantee any automatic championship as we still have to sweat because we’re not there yet and nine games isn’t a joke. We’ve to work hard and concentrate only on our performance and not what other teams are doing,” he said.

Bantu Rovers missed the chance to climb into third place despite their 1-0 win over ZRP Ntabazinduna as they had three points deducted for using a red-carded player.

Rovers remain fourth, a point ahead of Technosphere, who themselves dented Chiefs’ title aspirations by holding them 1-1.

Bottom of the log side Mpumalanga salvaged some pride by demolishing fellow strugglers Old Nic Mine FC 3-0.

Makomo climbed to within a point of the top four when they dismissed third placed Casmyn 2-1.

Nust’s poor showing continued when they played to a goalless draw against ZPC Hwange while Blackboots and Hwange Under-20 drew 0-0.

Results: Amagagasi 0-1 Bulawayo City, Bantu Rovers 1-0 Ntabazinduna, Technosphere 1-1 Bulawayo Chiefs, ZPC Hwange 0-0 Nust, Blackboots 0-0 Hwange U20, Mpumalanga 3-0 Old Nic Mine, Makomo 2-1Casmyn
