A POLICE officer based at Luveve Police Station in Bulawayo yesterday appeared in court for assaulting two men, one of whom lost his tooth after accusing them of making noise.

The two visited their friend at a house where Forgiven Jani is a tenant in Cowdray Park and the cop ended up beating them, saying they were disturbing his sleep by making noise.

Jani attacked them using a baton and then poured water on them before forcing them to do military drills such as rolling in mud and jumping up and down several times.

He appeared before Western Commonage provincial magistrate Willard Maphios Moyo facing assault charges and was remanded out of custody to November 11

Prosecuting, Mufaro Mageza said Jani assaulted Tendai Makunga and Terrene Zinyowera who lost one tooth.

“Jani assaulted Terence Zinyowera and Tendai Makunga and poured water on them. During the assault Zinyowera lost a tooth and the other one is about to fall off,” said Mageza.

The court heard that on July 5 at around 9AM in Cowdray Park, Zinyowera and Makunga went to Jani’s place of residence to see a friend.

Jani later accused the two of making noise and disturbing his sleep. A misunderstanding arose and Jani allegedly assaulted both men with fists and a baton on their backs several times.

He allegedly handcuffed them and ordered them to go outside where he poured cold water on them. Zinyowera lost his front tooth as a result of the assault.

Jani thereafter arrested the two complainants and took them to the police station where they were discharged.

They latter reported the matter to the police, leading to Jani’s arrest.

Zinyowera was referred to hospital and a medical report will be produced in court as an exhibit.
