THE Minister of Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa has warned civil servants against engaging in corruption saying those who get caught will be fired.Speaking during the 146th recruit prison officers’ pass-out parade in Ntabazinduna yesterday, Cde Mnangagwa said corruption was the government’s number one enemy.

“As Minister of Justice I will endeavour to ensure that those who are corrupt are brought to book and account for their deeds. We will kick out all the thieves. Corruption is impeding the economy’s growth as it derails our efforts towards the development of Zimbabwe,” he said.

Cde Mnangagwa said corruption had become a cancer in government and should be flushed out with immediate effect.

“The demanding and payment of bribes has resulted in civil strife and social inequalities with the widening of the gap between the rich and the poor hence it is a cancerous issue that should be dealt with decisively,” he said.

Cde Mnangagwa urged the graduating officers to shun corruption saying this was the only way to guarantee their stay in the service.
Since December, the media has been exposing corruption in the government and its parastatals.

Zimbabwe Broadcasting Cooperation (ZBC) chief executive officer Happison Muchechetere was suspended after revelations that he was drawing an obscene salary and perks while workers went for months without pay.

This also led to the dissolution of the ZBC board led by Cuthbert Dube who was earning $230,000 per month at Premier Service Medical Aid Society (PSMAS).

Resultantly, the government has capped a maximum salary of $6,000 for its parastatals and state enterprises chief executive officers as ways of dealing with corruption.
