ZIMBABWE Defence Forces’ HQ One Infantry Brigade will face Two Brigade Group from the Botswana Defence Forces at the bilateral games to be held at Bulawayo’s White City Stadium today.

The bilateral games are meant to foster relations between ZDF and BDF through sport and the two brigades will compete in soccer, netball, volleyball and 10km exercises.

Major Webster Marufu said yesterday that they were ready for the games, adding that sport-loving Bulawayo residents are in for a treat.

“The bilateral games are meant to foster relations between us and our Botswana counterparts through sport.

“The programme starts with an endurance race at the Victoria Falls Road where participants will run for 10km carrying weights. One Infantry Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Augustine Chipwere, will make an opening address upon arrival of endurance race participants and declare the games open,” said Major Marufu.

Last year, HQ One Brigade won the 10km fitness test which involved pushing tyres for 4km, running for 4km carrying weights and carrying logs for the remainder of the race.

Zimbabwe’s representatives lost 0-3 in volleyball and were beaten 1-2 in the tug-of-war.

HQ One Brigade went on to turn the hit on their counterparts in soccer, beating their Botswana counterparts 3-0 in the non-commissioned members’ division and 1-0 in the officers’ match. The competitions were held at Francistown Technical College.

HQ One Brigade used the bulk of Indlovu Iyanyathela players who compete in the Southern Region soccer league.

Marufu said after the final, football match participants will head to Khumalo Hotel for the African dance function.
