THE family of the woman who accuses Mpilo Central Hospital of incinerating her baby without her knowledge has insisted she gave birth to twins. Nomsa Mukurazita said she gave birth to twins last month at Mpilo Central Hospital and staff at the institution claimed one of the babies had died.

The hospital authorities dismissed Nomsa’s claim, saying they suspected that she was suffering from puerperal psychosis which is a mental illness which occurs following birth.

They said she gave birth to only one child. Mental tests conducted at Ingutsheni Hospital have concluded Nomsa was mentally disturbed after giving birth.

But Nomsa’s uncle Garikayi Mukurazita yesterday told The Chronicle that even after the tests, he still stood by the family’s stance that his niece gave birth to twins.

“Nomsa was found to be mentally ill but I maintain she gave birth to twins. Nomsa called me on February 13 and told me she had lost her baby boy. When l got to the hospital a nurse approached me thinking I was the father of the baby.

“When I told her I was actually the uncle, she told me that I could not sign any papers to have the baby incinerated as the father of the baby was the only one allowed to authorise that the hospital incinerates the baby,” Mukurazita said.

He said he was in a position to identify the nurse as he still remembers her face.

Mukurazita said the family reported the case at Mpilo Central Hospital Police Base.

He said the family was in the process of taking Nomsa to Harare where some tests would be conducted to confirm if she had given birth to twins.

Mpilo Central Hospital chief executive officer Dr Lawrence Mantiziba declined to comment, referring questions to the hospital’s paediatric consultant Dr Wedu Ndebele.

Dr Ndebele said: “I’m no longer part of the hospital. If the family still has a problem they should take it to the hospital’s Public Relations Officer. She’ll call the nurses who were on duty so that Mukurazita identifies the nurse he spoke to.”

He said Mukurazita should bring another relative to witness the proceedings so that the case is concluded.
