Several artistes from Zimbabwe and the region have already confirmed their participation at the gala, which is an annual event to commemorate the country’s independence.
Gala national co-ordinator Retired Major Anywhere Mutambudzi yesterday said all was in place for the musical extravaganza.
Rtd Maj Mutambudzi, who visited the venue last week, said the show would start at 6pm and would sail through into Friday morning.
“Midlands is more than ready to explode on Thursday and we visited the venue to see the progress. We have done all the requirements needed for such an occasion and what is left are just final touches. We urge the people to attend in large numbers because there will be a top-of-the-range sound system, good lighting and tight security,” he said.
Rtd Maj Mutambudzi, who is also a director in the Ministry of Information and Publicity, said many local artistes had confirmed participation except Sulumani Chimbetu and gospel artiste Baba Mechanic Manyeruke, who will be out of the country.
Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Patrick Chademana said as police they were guaranteeing tight security.
“We are very much prepared for the event and we have got enough manpower to deal with all unruly behaviour.
“We are aware that when hosting such an event some people might be tempted to go wild but let me warn that those who may think otherwise that they will be dealt with a heavy hand,” he said.
Gweru residents said they were thrilled and felt honoured to be hosting such a prestigious gala.
“We will definitely attend the show and we want to thank the authorities who have decided to give us the gala for free.
“Independence Day is a very important day in our history and we feel honoured that the leaders have decided to hold the event in Ascot,” Lindah Mushona of Mkoba said.
Another resident, Mr Takudzwa Chireba, added: “The Independence Gala is an opportunity for us to celebrate the achievements of our heroes.
“Over the years, many such events have been held across the country but this time Gweru is the focus of attention.”
There is a possibility that South African music icon Freddie “Amadamara” Gwala, a cultural dance group from Cuba and Namibia-based Zimbabwean artiste Simon Chidhuza and his group Sanyati Stars, will perform. Bulawayo-based Mokesi Connexion, who rose to fame with their hit song “Pfuma Yatete”, will have a chance to showcase their talent.
