THE Ministry of Sport and Recreation has appointed an interim committee for the Zimbabwe Wushu Association following a three-year ban of the Gilbert Makowa-led one.

The previous committee was found guilty of violating the Sport and Recreation Commission’s constitution.

Mukweya White,  a former wushu (Chinese martial arts) instructor in the Zimbabwe Republic Police and one of the first people to introduce Wushu to communities in Zimbabwe, is now at the helm of the association.

White also holds a certificate in wushu  coaching.

Eusebia Madembo,  who holds a diploma in wushu (Tianjin Wushu Institute, China) as well as coaching certificates in wushu and a number of other sporting disciplines becomes the secretary general while Never Kufaigore will be in charge of the association’s finances. The other committee members are Blessing Masau, Sanelisiwe Sibanda, Richard Kufazvinei and Mercy Hanyani.

The terms of reference of the interim committee, according to a statement issued by the SRC communications officer Tirivashe Nheweyembwa, will be to revisit the Zimbabwe Wushu Association Constitution and align it with the existing trends in sport, draft a strategic plan for the association, set up structures at ward, district and provincial level, organise local competitions and ensure participation at regional, continental and international level, assume the rights and responsibilities of the national executive, submit monthly progress reports to the SRC and convene a Special General Meeting to elect a substantive executive committee by end of April 2017.

“In recommending the above members, the SRC considered their experience and qualifications in sport in general and in particular wushu. We are generally satisfied that they will be able to reconstruct Wushu by ensuring that it has robust structures from ward to national level.

The SRC would like to thank all the stakeholders who co-operated with it in coming up with this committee and would hope that the support rendered in putting together this body will continuously be extended for the growth and development of wushu.

We wish the wushu family every success in rebuilding the sport,” said the SRC acting director general Joseph Muchechetere.
