PROMISING Highlanders FC winger Knox Mutizwa yesterday opened up on what happened on Sunday night when he was burnt in a mishap at his Pelandaba home.

Mutizwa dismissed claims that his wife Naome Mayebe poured some hot water at his back following a domestic dispute at their rented home after the player had allegedly come home late.

He claimed his wife was at Lupane State University in the Matabeleland North capital when the incident took place.

“I was surprised that people went to the newspapers and lied that I was involved in a dispute and my wife was responsible for the burns on my back. My wife was away at school at Lupane State Univesity in Lupane. There’s no way she could have done anything horrible to me. I’m expecting her to come to Bulawayo from Lupane tomorrow,” said Mutizwa yesterday.

The Highlanders midfielder said the accident happened when he was alone in his bedroom.

“I was tired and decided to lie down on the floor while I was boiling water with an electric kettle which I had placed on the edge of a small cabinet. The problem is I didn’t properly seal the lid which caused the water to spill on me while I was lying on the floor,” he said.

The 24-year-old midfielder said he felt let down that people had lied about circumstances leading to his burns.

“I’m very disappointed at the people who lied about my accident. Their lies will affect my wife’s concentration in her studies, not to mention that they’ve soiled an innocent person’s name. How are people going to look at her at school after such accusations?” he said.

Mutizwa said if indeed it was true that it was Mayebe, there could have been a police report.

He said his injuries are not serious and is expected to be back at training in the next fortnight to four weeks. “The doctors said it might take me at least two weeks to heal and it won’t affect my training.

“I’ll be ready in time to play Dynamos in the ZNA Charity Shield final, and I’m very confident that we will win,” he said.

Mutizwa featured in Bosso’s 1-0 win over How Mine at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday and was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital on Monday morning where he was admitted to Ward A2, the burns section.
