ZIMBABWE Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) Matabeleland region will host this year’s Commissioner General Sports Week at Ntabazinduna Prisons Training School from August 29 to September 3.

The competition will run under the theme “Correct, Empower and Develop through sports” and is set to feature about 800 prison officers representing ZPCS’ four regions, Mashonaland, Matabeleland, Midlands/Masvingo and Manicaland, and National Headquarters.

They will compete in soccer, netball, volleyball, darts, chess, athletics, tug of war, and newly added disciplines pool, tennis and golf.

“The event seeks to promote interaction among officers and also open windows for recreation. Officers will showcase their talents and skills in various sporting disciplines,” said Senior Assistant Commissioner Mailosi Jomane, the ZPCS officer commanding Bulawayo Metro province.

“As officers, this is the only time we get together and interact with other officers from different regions; therefore, this competition is more about getting together than winning prizes.”

Winning teams and individuals will walk away with prizes that include cash and trophies.

ZPCS Bulawayo Metro public relations officer, principal correctional officer Garainashe Moyo, said his organisation does not exist in isolation, as it is an integral part of the community and members of the public were free to attend their event.
