RUTENDO Nyahora won the inaugural 10km Liquor Hub Fun Run which was held in Bulawayo yesterday. She came home in 34 minutes 54.23 seconds while Kelvin Pangiso triumphed in the men’s category crossing the line in 30 minutes 36.40 seconds. For coming first in their categories, each of the two seasoned runners walked away $500 richer.

Nyahora, who won the South Africa’s Old Mutual Soweto Marathon’s 10km at the beginning of the month, came into the Bulawayo race as the favourite and lived up to the billing.

She beat a field that had among top athletes Constance Nyasango who finished second in 36 minutes 48.02 seconds, third placed Yvette Makamure who clocked 42 minutes 50.58 seconds and Linnet Tomu who was fourth in 46 minutes 33.86 seconds.

An elated Nyahora said she had an easy race. “I’m happy to have won this race. I was expecting a difficult race but it wasn’t that tough. Being a new course everyone was cautious but it was flawless. Being the inaugural winner of this race gives me joy and I’m looking forward to competing at this race again next year,” said Nyahora.

The race started at the Liquor Hub, which is along Fife Street, between Fourth and Fifth Avenues. Athletes ran east along 4th Avenue past the Heath Streak Cricket Academy up to the Khumalo Hockey Stadium and back to town via Leopold Takawira Avenue, finishing at the Liquor Hub.

Raj Modi sponsored the race to the tune of $10,000 with the top three in the senior men and women’s events each getting $500, $300 and $200.

Pangiso beat Tendai Zimuto in a tightly contested race winning the event in 30 minutes 36.40 seconds with the latter coming home in 30 minutes 50.06 seconds.

Mqondisi Moyo claimed the junior men’s first prize of $150 after posting a time of 32 minutes 04.87 seconds with Respect Chinosiya finishing second in 32 minutes 54.71 seconds while Dumo Mkwananzi was third a minute later. The junior women’s competition winner was Raviro Magomo who clocked 37 minutes 36.53 seconds.
