ZIMBABWE’S Vickram Singh and China’s Zhan Yang successfully defended their China-Zimbabwe table tennis tournament titles at Belvedere Technical Teachers College over the weekend.

Zimbabwe’s top seed Singh beat Liping 3-1 in the men’s singles final.

In the women’s singles, defending champion, Zhang Yang beat Zimbabwean top seed, 19-year-old Midlands State University psychology student, Vimbai Nicole Makuvaza, 3-1 to retain her title.

Zimbabwe went on to win the men’s team match while China were crowned the women champions.

This year’s edition of the ‘The Chinese Ambassador’s Cup’ saw the top five players from each country taking on each other.

The tournament, which began in 2016, is meant to promote sporting exchanges and strengthen co-operation between China and Zimbabwe.

The China-Zimbabwe table tennis friendly match is hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe and co-organised by the Zimbabwe Chinese Table Tennis Association and the Zimbabwe Table Tennis Union.

It is sponsored by local companies and the Chinese community in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe Table Tennis Union president John Muringani said the tournament was a success.

“Everything went on well and the level of competition was high and we are grateful the Chinese Embassy and the China community in Zimbabwe for the tournament.

“The event worked well for us as it is good practice ahead of the Region V Games set for Botswana in December,” said Muringani.
