THE Bulawayo Athletics Board (Bab) expects close to 100 athletes for selection of Team Zimbabwe for the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Youth Games (Ausc) meet tomorrow.

So far, 60 athletes from around the country have registered for the meet set for White City Stadium, but Team Zimbabwe will consist of 16 girls and 16 boys.

Bab chairperson Watson Madanyika said: “As of now 60 athletes have registered and we are expecting about 100 athletes. Measures that we have put in place are such that athletes, coaches and officials will use one entrance along Hyde Park Road. We will encourage athletes to leave the stadium soon after finishing their events.”

Events lined up for the day include the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 2000m steeplechase, 3000m, 100m hurdles (women), 110m hurdles (men), 400m hurdles, 5000m (women) walk, 10  000m (men) walk, long jump, high jump and shot put. The Ausc Games are expected to take place in Maseru, Lesotho, in December. They were postponed last year due to outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The decision to postpone the Games by 12 months was taken by the Ausc Region 5 Ministers’ Troika in July last year after a surge in Covid-19 cases around the region.
