A Bulawayo film production — “A High School Diary” — that portrays the life of teenagers in Zimbabwe schools, has earned a nomination for the National Arts Merit Awards (Nama) this year.

The production, created by John Mabuyane, is competing in the Outstanding Screen Production (Television) category, along with four other contenders. The second season of “A High School Diary” is currently airing on NRTV, DStv Channel 288.

Mabuyane said he was thrilled by the timely recognition at the height of his career.

“A nomination for me is already a win. Being nominated by the biggest awarder in the country is an absolute honour, to be honest. This literally proves how outstanding my production was to be recognised with a nomination this year. I am excited.

“The arts sector has grown as many producers took a stand and told our own Zimbabwean stories the best way they could. Beautiful stories and creativity were done. We saw filmmakers collaborating, which proves the arts sector is growing,” he said.

Mabuyane urged the Government to support the growth of the sector by providing funding and opportunities for film investors globally.

“There is need for the Government to put an eagle’s eye view of funding the sector and opening opportunities for film investors globally. There should be policies in place that will be implemented so as to make sure our country is a film village for every producer,” he said.

Mabuyane praised the cast and crew of ‘A High School Diary’ for their unwavering support and dedication to make the production a success.

“I attribute my national recognition to my wonderful cast and crew who worked tirelessly night after night in making such a great production, “A High School Diary”. Winning the gong will be the biggest gift from God to myself and my hometown. It will be motivation to independent producers that regardless of where you come from, it is possible to reach mountain peaks with your craft and God’s time is the best,” he said. —@mthabisi_mthire
