THE City of Bulawayo is set to host an extraordinary event that promises to be a groundbreaking experience for attendees. Taking place later this month, the National Lobola/Roora Expo will be a celebration of culture, creativity, and the unique designs associated with lobola and roora ceremonies. Unlike traditional business expos, this event will showcase a more informal yet vibrant atmosphere, capturing the essence of these joyous occasions.

The Parkview Wizmann Club, a popular venue in Bulawayo, will serve as the backdrop for this extraordinary gathering on the 24th of June. Local service providers specialising in lobola and roora ceremonies will come together to exhibit their talents and demonstrate the diverse array of designs they create for these special occasions.

Nyaradzo Motsi, one of the event organisers and affectionately known as MC Shumbakadzi, explained that the inspiration behind the expo came from the growing trend of extravagant lobola celebrations. Recognising the significance of this cultural practice, Motsi saw an opportunity to foster cultural exchange and encourage the sharing of ideas between different regions of the country.

Lobola is part of our culture and it’s high time we put it onto the map by showcasing the unique ways people do it in their areas. But when we started this idea with my partner, Pamela Principal we also wanted to give service providers who are always decorating people’s lobola events to also a chance to advertise their work and create networks,” said Motsi.

Anticipating a diverse range of participants, the organisers hope to attract more than 30 service providers to the expo. Acknowledging that this is a novel concept, Motsi understands that some providers may initially adopt a wait-and-see approach. However, with 11 services already registered, the excitement surrounding the event is palpable.

“There are some interesting games that are going to be played at the expo. For instance, we will have a raffle draw where people are going to be winning prizes. By doing this raffle draw we are giving back to the community which has always been supportive to different service providers who are always decorating for them,” said Motsi.

The organisers are eagerly anticipating the upcoming event, envisioning it as the catalyst for future expos that will attract attendees from across the country. The National Lobola/Roora expo is not confined to Bulawayo; it is an opportunity for all regions to come together, celebrate their shared heritage, and showcase their unique cultural expressions. With its fusion of creativity, culture, and community engagement, this inaugural expo is poised to leave a lasting impression and pave the way for future celebrations of Zimbabwean traditions. — @flora_sibanda
