“WHEN Karl Benz from Germany invented the first automobile back in the day, the image he painted meant that travelling was going to be easy but little did he know that his idea would sire an even bigger picture, that of beautifying his invention,” reflects the innovative and visionary mind of Qhubekani Ndlovu, a vehicular-sound aficionado hailing from the dusty streets of an old Bulawayo suburb.

Car trimming, the process of altering the appearance of a car’s interior and exterior, has become Ndlovu’s hobby. With a meticulous touch, he transforms everyday automobiles into stunning works of art. From a complete overhaul of the interior to the addition of exquisite materials and audio enhancements, Ndlovu’s craftsmanship gives vehicles a captivating aesthetic blinder that catches the eye of all who behold them.

Drawing inspiration from the custom prevalent in the United States of America and South Africa, where vehicles are designed to reflect personal style and sound installations are a norm, Ndlovu has made his mark in the industry. His journey began three decades ago, initially focusing on fixing radios and televisions. As technology advanced, Ndlovu realised the need to take a significant step forward.

“I grew up as a busy bee, trying to find out how mechanical things work, and I would open radios up to see what makes them work. This led me to study Automotive and Electrical Engineering at Speciss College in 1993 to enhance my skills, and that’s when I found out about trimming. Ever since, my life hasn’t been the same,” he reminisces, a twinkle of passion in his eyes.

Ndlovu’s dedication and expertise led him to establish “SaMaNyo Sounds and Designs” (SSD) in 2010. Through this company, he ensures that motorists drive in style, with the interior of their vehicles resembling the comforts of home. His craftsmanship has attracted the attention of renowned individuals such as Omega Sibanda, Kruger, Marvelous Nakamba and many others who have sought his artistic touch for their own vehicles.

With a wide array of tools at his disposal, including staple and tack removers, webbing stretchers, pliers, hammers, mallets, cutting nippers, pincers, and ripping tools, Ndlovu has perfected his craft. Working alone, a rarity in his line of work, he carefully manoeuvres and transforms vehicles, sculpting them into captivating pieces of art. The technicality of his job demands utmost precision and attention to detail, leaving no room for errors that could compromise his brand or endanger his clients.

“Most of the time, I get asked why I work alone. This is because this is a very delicate job that demands one to be very calculative because one tiny mistake might be injurious if not fatal. One time, I hired an intern, and due to his negligence, something bad happened, and I almost lost a client. So after that, I decided to go it alone for fear of running losses and with my brand being jeopardised,” he shares, underlining the importance of safeguarding his reputation and maintaining the highest standards of craftsmanship.

Unfortunately, Ndlovu has experienced a recent drop in business due to the prevailing economic challenges. The weakening economy has led many to perceive car trimming as an unnecessary expense, affecting the demand for his services. Additionally, the time-consuming process of importing equipment from overseas poses a hindrance to his ability to execute his duties effectively.

Nevertheless, Ndlovu’s remarkable accomplishments in the relatively unpopular industry have allowed him to accumulate a fortune, surpassing even the financial achievements of those in white-collar occupations.

“I have been able to buy a plot in Esigodini and establish a foundation for my family,” Ndlovu proudly reveals.

“Car trimming has provided for my loved ones and given me the opportunity to save and travel. I’ve been able to purchase vehicles and own a house, all thanks to this work. I’m truly grateful to the Lord for the blessings bestowed upon me.”

Despite the challenges he faces, Ndlovu remains resilient and passionate about his craft. Each day, he enters his workshop with unwavering dedication, ready to create masterpieces on wheels. His vision extends beyond the economic downturn, as he envisions a future where car trimming is recognised and embraced as an art form, where individuals see the value in transforming their vehicles into personalised expressions of style and luxury.

As the automotive industry continues to evolve, Ndlovu eagerly stays abreast of the latest trends and technological advancements. He strives to incorporate innovative features and materials into his designs, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in car trimming. His commitment to excellence and his unwavering pursuit of perfection have earned him a reputation as a trailblazer in the industry, setting the standards for quality and craftsmanship.

In the midst of a bustling city, where cars blur by in a sea of uniformity, Ndlovu’s creations stand out as beacons of individuality and self-expression. Each vehicle that leaves his workshop tells a unique story, a reflection of its owner’s personality and aspirations. It is through his artistry and attention to detail that Ndlovu adds a touch of luxury, transforming mere transportation into an extraordinary lifestyle experience.
