ZAPU leader, Dr Dumiso Dabengwa has been misrepresenting himself to the people especially of Matabeleland that he pulled out of the Unity Accord yet he was not part of the agreement, a Zanu-PF Politburo member has said.In 1987, Zanu-PF and PF Zapu committed themselves to unite under one political party –                                                                                                                Zanu-PF – with President Mugabe as the First Secretary and President of the party, said Cde Thokozile Mathuthu.

Addressing hundreds of Zanu-PF supporters gathered at a rally at Chinotimba Stadium in Victoria Falls at the weekend, Cde Mathuthu, who is also Matabeleland North Governor and Resident Minister, said Dr Dabengwa and his Zapu party could not pull out of the Unity Accord when he, at a personal level was never part of it from the onset.  She said Dr Dabengwa was seeking relevance by telling people “lies.”

“Dabengwa was not one of the signatories to the Unity Accord. He did not sign anything because he was nothing and now he says he can pull out of the Unity Accord yet he signed nothing.

“President Mugabe and the late Vice-President Dr Joshua Nkomo signed the Unity Accord. If a husband and wife want to divorce, they go to the court to have the marriage nullified. But in the case of the Unity Accord, it hasn’t been nullified. It was agreed by President Mugabe and the late Vice President Nkomo,” she said.

Added Cde Mathuthu, “If these two leaders were no longer interested in the accord, they could have gone back to the table and signed it off but they did not do that.”

She said the Unity Accord never appointed Dr Dabengwa or anyone for that matter to disown it at any time.
She said even on his death bed, the late Dr Nkomo spoke of peace and unity among Zimbabweans.

“President Mugabe visited the late VP Nkomo on his death bed and he told him that he was leaving behind his children from Zapu under the Unity Accord. VP Nkomo also said there should be peace and unity of purpose in the country and that the people should get back their land. So President Mugabe up to today has been preaching about that peace and the unity of purpose,” said Cde Mathuthu.

Cde Mathuthu said Dr Dabengwa should form his own party using his own name and symbol and desist from telling people lies about the Unity Accord. “But now someone (Dabengwa) wants to use the Unity Accord as an excuse of launching a political party.
He should form a party using his own name and symbol.

“Form your own political party and stop telling   lies.”
