A-47-YEAR-old man from Esigodini died on the spot when he rammed his Toyota Cressida into a truck along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road on Wednesday night.

The accident occurred around 8 PM.

A source close to investigations said Ekion Tshuma failed to give way to the truck at the 44km peg, where Esikhoveni Road intersects with the highway.

Matabeleland South police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele said:

“I can confirm we received a report of a fatal accident. On approaching an intersection, the driver of the light vehicle failed to give way to the truck which was moving along the highway, thereby hitting on the side of the haulage truck.

“This is yet another accident that seems to have been caused by human error. Investigations are underway.”

As we near the festive season, national police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba warned motorists to observe safety regulations.

“We implore motorists to observe all traffic laws as they travel to different destinations. Motorists are urged to plan their journeys and avoid travelling at night. We also entreat public service operators to desist from over- burdening drivers by carrying out incentivised extra trips as fatigue will catch- up with them leading to accidents.

“Overloading and speeding is a crime hence we urge motorists and public transport owners to desist from malpractice. Motorists should check that their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on journeys,” she said.

Snr Asst Comm Charamba said police will not hesitate to impound defective vehicles and arrest those who flout the rules of the road.

“Please take note that speed thrills but kills. Let us all contribute towards a crime and accident free holiday,” she said. — @winnie_masara
