ZURICH — World football’s governing body Fifa issued a statement yesterday backing African counterparts Caf, over their measures to control the spread of the Ebola virus. Fifa said they were in regular contact with the World Health Organisation (WHO) in order to help impede the spread of Ebola, known as EVD (Ebola Virus Disease) at sporting events.

“Fifa supports the decision by the Confederation of African Football (Caf) to organise the international matches of the countries currently experiencing EVD intense transmission (Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea) on neutral ground,” said the statement.

Fifa also said they recommend clubs “carry out a medical check-up” on players returning from “an international fixture involving a high-risk country”.
Fifa confirmed that the Club World Cup would go ahead in Morocco in December as planned.

“According to the World Health Organisation there are currently no cases of Ebola reported from Morocco and therefore all preparations continue as planned.

“Fifa is monitoring the situation and is in close contact with the Moroccan authorities and constantly updating its position in accordance with WHO technical guidance,” added the statement.

Meanwhile, Caf has set rules for choosing the best third placed team in the current 2015 African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
According to Caf, the third placed team with the highest points across qualifying groups will join the top two from all groups. The first two teams in each group will qualify for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations that will take place in Morocco.

Caf rules allow the best third-placed team in the seven groups of qualifiers to reach the finals, but on definite procedures.
If two teams or more are equal in points, goal difference will be decisive. If goal difference is the same, the team that scored more will play in Morocco.
Finally, if two teams are equal in scored goals, they should play a decider match to choose the winner.

Egypt are third in Group G with six points, just one point behind second-placed Senegal and four away from leaders Tunisia.
On Sunday, Caf officially informed the Egyptian Football Association that the third placed team with the highest points will be chosen. — AFP.
