A 47-YEAR-OLD man from Mazibeka 1 village under Chief Malisa in Silobela died upon admission to Silobela District Hospital after being assaulted with a log for trying to broker peace between a fighting couple.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the incident, which happened on Christmas Day.

He said police have since arrested Blessing Maphosa of the same village who allegedly struck the now-deceased Mandla Moyo with a log on the head several times accusing him of having an affair with his wife.

“Maphosa and his wife Praise Nyoni (36) from Mazibeka village were on separation and Praise was staying with her parents. On Sunday around 5pm Maphosa visited his wife with the intention to settle their difference,” said Insp Mahoko.
“While they were talking with the wife Maphosa became violent and Praise had to seek refuge at her neighbour Sisa Ndlovu’s homestead.

Sisa tried to counsel them to no avail until she called other neighbours to assist in solving their differences.”
It was at this point that the now deceased Moyo emerged to assist in settling the couple’s differences but was assaulted as Maphosa suspected him of having an affair with his wife.

“Maphosa took a log from a fence and struck Moyo several times on the head and Moyo fell to the ground and bled profusely until he became unconscious,” said Insp Mahoko.

He said the now-deceased sustained several wounds on the head following the attack and was rushed to Silobela District Hospital while his condition deteriorated and he died upon admission.

A report was made to the Zimbabwe Republic Police at Silobela and police attended the scene.
“We appeal to the members of the public to always prioritise settling disputes through dialogue,” he said.–@NomqheleC
