‘Golden gong’ for Macheso

Arts Festival over the weekend for putting Mashonaland Central province on the map through music.
The “Tafadzwa” hitmaker was born in Shamva, which falls under Mashonaland Central.
Macheso received the award – dubbed “The Golden Award” – and is the first of its kind to be given to an artiste in the province that also boasts a rich history and background of gold mining, especially Bindura, the host town of the festival.
“We decided to give this award to Macheso in recognition of his exploits in the music industry. He comes from Shamva, which falls under Mashonaland Central province, and this is a token of thanking him for putting the province on the map through music,” said Saidi Umtali, the chairperson of the Bindura Arts Festival.
Macheso received the “Golden Award” during the festival that was held at the Coach House Inn in Bindura on Saturday.
“Cheso Power”, as he is affectionately called in music circles, is led the line-up of guest performers at the inaugural event that started at 12 midday and ran until the early hours of Sunday.
“We decided to come up with the festival after realising that there were a lot of upcoming artistes in the province who have the talent but lack the platform to showcase themselves, hence this year’s theme, ‘Empowering the Youths Through Arts’,” said Umtali.
Upcoming musical groups from the province also received prizes at the festival.
Zimbabwe’s celebrated gospel couple Pastor Charles and wife Olivia Charamba brought the house down with a polished and well choreographed showing at the music festival.
Clad in a trendy cream suit, Baba Charamba made a grand appearance on stage accompanied by Mai Charamba to wild applause. Fans had waited with bated breath to watch the Charambas, who were amongst the major drawcards. After showcasing the upstarts, the Charambas sealed off the festival with a standout act.
They performed songs such as “Nyika YeZimbabwe” and “Mviro Mviro” much to the delight of the crowd.
The couple, which was recently blessed with a bouncing baby boy gave fans a show of a lifetime.
It was however, disturbing to note that some of artists who were lined-up to perform did no show up.
But the likes of Madiz, Hosiah Chipanga, Trevor Dongo and Cephas Mashakada they gave their best in song and dance.
Trevor and Madiz were rocked fans with their urban grooves tracks that kept revellers on the dance floor.
Mashakada also gave a superb performance in the early hours of Sunday morning.
