Inyathi High dominate Matabeleland North chess tourney International Chess Federation (FIDE)

INYATHI High School are the winners of the 2023 Matabeleland North Chess inter-schools tournament held at Mabhikwa High School in Lupane.

The tournament, which attracted 15 secondary schools across the province, started last Wednesday and ended on Saturday.

A total of 203 pupils made up of 105 boys and 98 girls participated in the tournament which is so far the highest attendance at a chess tournament in the province.

Inyathi High School won six gold medals, one silver and one bronze to claim first position.
In second position was David Livingstone Memorial School which won three gold medals, three silver and six bronze while Mosi-Oa-Tunya High School came third with three gold and one silver.

In fourth position was Saint James High School with one gold and three silver medals while Gloag High School was number five after winning one gold and one bronze.

Tirison Cheteni

Selection of the provincial team to represent Matabeleland North in the National Association of Secondary Heads (Nash) Scholars Chess Championships to be held in Gokwe starting on Thursday, was the major highlight of the tournament.

Speaking after the tournament, head in charge of Chess in the province, Tirison Cheteni said the attendance at the tournament was confirmation that the sport was in all the districts in the province.

“We have a shortage of chess sets and clocks but what is pleasing is that the tournament was very successful and we want to commend our technical team. The games were really interesting and most of the competitors have really improved compared to performance at the last tournament,” he said.

Mr Cheteni appealed to schoolheads and the corporate world to support the game of chess.
He said it was important for the slected provincial team to meet in camp to sharpen skills before going to Gokwe.
