Prominent lawyer Vimbai Nyemba was on Friday elected as Law Society of Zimbabwe president, taking over from Lloyd Mhishi, whose tenure had expired.

Nyemba, who operates V Nyemba and Associates in Harare, was deputy president of the society prior to her elevation to head the organisation.

She will be deputised by Gweru-based lawyer Chaka Mashoko of Jumo, Mashoko and Associates.

The election was held in Harare on Friday after the expiry of Mhishi’s two-year term.

LSZ secretary Edward Mapara confirmed the development saying Mhishi’s tenure expired on Friday.

Outgoing president Mhishi said he had managed to achieve his set goals over the two-year period adding that Nyemba was capable of taking the society to greater heights.

“I am happy to have had this opportunity to serve my country in the capacity of the president of the Law Society. It has been such an honour and I step down satisfied that I have made a contribution.

“I have achieved what I set out to do at the beginning, in particular, I believe that I have made the Law Society of Zimbabwe more relevant and visible to its many and varied stakeholders.

“I wish all the best to my successor and am confident that she is capable of taking the society to even greater heights,” said Mhishi.

A LSZ president’s term of office is two years and after its expiry, the 11-member council elects a new president in terms of the society’s constitution.

The 11 councillors, two of whom are seconded by the Minister of Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, can serve for up to three years.
