Government is committed to completely eradicate poverty and has put in place various initiatives to achieve the goal, Vice President Kembo Mohadi has said.

He said this while addressing delegates at a reception to mark the 73rd anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.

“At the heart of the SDGs is the promise to end poverty and hunger,” said VP Mohadi. “The Government is fully committed to reduce poverty in all its forms. My Government has put poverty eradication at the top of its agenda.

“Various programmes are in place to reduce poverty and eventually eradicate it. Top among them is the support to the agriculture sector.

“Likewise, Government is committed to end hunger through modernisation and mechanisation of the agriculture sector, as well as various initiatives which include among others, increasing land utilisation, rehabilitating and developing new irrigation schemes, construction of more dams, improving agricultural productivity, funding of the special agricultural programme, Command Agriculture as well as the Presidential input scheme.”

VP Mohadi said Government was putting in place mechanisms to improve health care in the country.

“For people to enjoy a better life, they need access to quality and affordable health services, in view of this the Goverment is undertaking initiatives to achieve quality health care and improve delivery services countrywide,” he said.

“In partnership with the private sector and development partners, a number of hospitals are to be refurbished in line with modern day universal health care standards. Efforts are also being made to close the gaps in the health sector through infrastructure development.

“Similarly, efforts are being made to provide hospitals with adequate medical services, requisite medical professionals as well as medicines, drugs and latest medical equipment in line with international standards.”

VP Mohadi said Government would continue to open up the democratic space in the country as was seen by the high number of political parties that contested the July 30 harmonised elections.

“The Government will continue to open up the democratic space as well as call for peace, unity and tolerance of divergent views, among our people,” he said.

“Likewise, efforts will be made to continue and entrenching constitutionalism, democracy, good governance, peace, harmony and tranquillity.

“We believe that it is under such conditions that sustainable development, inclusive economic growth and prosperity as well as better life and freedom can be achieved.”
