THIRTY-FIVE boxers traded leather in 18 bouts at the Bulawayo Amateur Boxing Association Princess Moyo of Sikhulile knocked out Great Zimbabwe University’s Melody Nyanzunda in the women’s light-welterweight division.

Another promising Sikhulile boxer Keith Mbedzi knocked out Nketa’s Tapiwa Basket in the men’s bantamweight fight.

Four knockouts were registered in the catch-weight division where Meluleki Ntini of Sikhulile pummelled club mate Lukhanyiso Moyo in the third bout of the day.

Adneta Mabeza from Sikhulile also knocked out Siyabonga Bhebhe of Bulawayo West, while Antonio Mushakwa of Great Zimbabwe University pounded Fredrick Mabhena of Bulawayo West. Nketa’s Bongani Ndlovu got the better of Tinotenda Mbiriri from Great Zimbabwe.

Baba vice-chairman Ezwell Ndlovu was happy with the turnout and said they would hold another tournament at Mathonisa next month.

“The crowd was good and the boxers didn’t disappoint as they put up stellar performances. Because of the support we got from the public and Mathonisa management, we have decided to hold our next event there before moving on with our ‘take boxing to the people’ initiative,” said Ndlovu.

The best fight of the day was a catch weight battle between Great Zimbabwe’s Proud Guruzane and Lwazi Mpofu of Tshaka, which was a split decision. Guruzane won 2-1, even though the crowd felt that Mpofu deserved victory.
