In a statement, NRZ public relations officer, Mr Fanuel Masikati said the train service, dubbed Valentine Sashay Steam Safari is aimed at promoting rail leisure service and boost the tourism industry ahead of the United Nations World Tourism  (UNWTO) event in August.

“The Valentine Sashay Steam Safari train will depart from Bulawayo Railway Station at 3 pm on 17 February next Sunday to Khami Railway Station. Those intending to travel on this special train, should arrive at the station at 2pm to facilitate registration, confirmation and booking.

“The service is meant to bring a Valentine’s mood for our special guests wishing to enjoy the comfort of rail leisure train travel,” said Masikati.

Valentine’s Day falls on 14 February each year.

Mr Masikati said the railway company was committed to provide different kinds of service to its customers.

“NRZ is geared to provide efficient rail leisure steam safari trains at a reasonable cost to cater for all classes of the society from top business executives, leisure lovers and steam enthusiasts.

“The fare for the Valentine Sashay Steam Safari train is only $75 per couple and $40 for a single adult person. The fare includes a candle-lit dinner and drinks that will be served at the Railway Museum,” he said.

Mr Masikati said this year the company is focusing on providing more steam safari coaches, as the nation prepares for the UNWTO assembly.

“More steam safari trains are earmarked to be run this year as the nation prepares to host the UNWTO assembly, a move that would boost the tourism industry in the country.

“Zimbabwe is one of the remaining countries in the world, which still own steam locomotives that are popular with international steam enthusiasts from overseas,” he said.

Mr Masikati said the NRZ had this year improved the luxury in the steam safari train and museum coaches, coupled with lots of entertainment.

The NRZ ran similar services during the Valentine’s and Fathers’ Day last year.

“We ran similar train services last year and this is popular with both local and international enthusiasts. This year, however, we are providing luxurious Museum Coaches blended with a lot of entertainment.

“This is a romantic experience of a lifetime not to be missed by leisure lovers, who will indeed enjoy the breathtaking scenery along the way to Khami Railway Station on board. The experience will also re-kindle memories of yesteryear in our customers,” he said.
