THE Project Management Institute of Zimbabwe (PMIZ) yesterday presented awards to four companies for successfully championing national projects that have a wider macro-economic impact.

Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara), Unki Platinum Mine, Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) and Delta Beverages were presented with the awards during the 2015 International Project Management Day commemorations in Bulawayo yesterday.

PMIZ chief executive officer Peter Banda said the projects involved large scale construction which had significant impact on the country’s infrastructural deficit.

“The four Zimbabwe projects included on the selection menu this year were objectively scrutinised by our corporate membership adjudication team based on the scope, time and cost baselines against best practice,” said Banda.

“Our research students attached to these projects have been quietly gathering data about these projects during the last two years.”

Unki was awarded the most outstanding community development project prize.

The project involved a facelift to the old mining town of Shurugwi through its $120 million state of the art housing project.

Zinara scooped an award for the most innovative project of 2015, which PMIZ said was reserved for an institution that went through a smart public private partnership.

The project involved the rehabilitation of the Harare Airport Road.

The Zimbabwe Power Company was awarded for the most outstanding infrastructure for implementing the ongoing 300MW Kariba South Hydro-Power extension project.

Delta Beverages got the project of the year award after opening a new beverages plant worth about $16 million in Bulawayo.

Banda said the identified projects offer prospects of improved economic growth at a time when the country is in dire need of foreign direct investment.
