POLICE gunned down a suspected poacher during a shootout at Mazunga Ranch, 60km west of Beitbridge town.

His accomplice allegedly grabbed a firearm from his dead friend and escaped following an exchange of gunfire on Saturday.

Police have since launched a manhunt for the suspect. National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the incident on Tuesday.

She said police recovered two hunters’ knives and a silencer from the poacher’s body.

“I can confirm the death of a poacher at Mazunga Ranch on Saturday evening after there was an exchange of gunfire between two poachers, a team of game rangers and police officers,” said Snr Asst Comm Charamba.

“The two were seen entering the ranch by some people who then informed the ranch manager. He then mobilised the rangers and the police to track the two. “Upon spotting the police and rangers, the suspects opened fire prompting the police and rangers to shoot back”.

She said one of the poachers was shot and died on the spot.

“His body has been taken to Beitbridge District Hospital while efforts are being made to arrest his accomplice,” said Snr Asst Comm Charamba. She said the man’s next of kin were yet to be advised.

The incident comes a few weeks after four suspected poachers, who include Munyaradzi Mwonzora, younger brother to the MDC-T secretary general Douglas Mwonzora, were arrested at Matopo National Park. They are accused of illegally hunting rhinos at the park, located in Matabeleland South province.

Other members of the gang are Clement Mazhandu, 39, Shadreck Kuvarega, 39, and Brighton Nkosilathi Nyathi, 26. MDC-T legislator for Tsholotsho (proportional representation) Lwazi Sibanda has since been questioned by the police in connection with the matter.

The quartet is expected to appear at the Kezi Magistrate court for trial.
