Zimbabwe 1-1 Mozambique

HERMENEGILDO CAPENA’s deep injury time equaliser gave Mozambique a point and denied Zimbabwe a good start in the opening match of the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Under-20 Youth Games football match played at Barbourfields Stadium on Friday.

Thembalethu Mthunzi’s goal in the first half looked to have set Zimbabwe on a course to victory until a thunderous conclusion in the second half.

As Zimbabwe were preparing to celebrate a hard fought victory Capena, in a moment of magic, realised that Kelvin Shangira, the Zimbabwe goalkeeper was off his and he booted the ball beyond the reach of the shot stopper.

Zimbabwe tried to go all out on the attack in an effort to snatch victory but it was already too late. Mozambique’s defence, which had restricted Zimbabwe to one goal, made sure that a stalemate was the result of the day. Jose Cossa was shown a second yellow card and a red card as Mozambique defended in numbers.

But he need not have been reckless – the equaliser had already dampened Zimbabwe.
