MARCH is the month to celebrate women across all societies and this week, we celebrate Oratile Shumba.

Known affectionately as Orah, her life story embodies strength and triumph in the face of challenges.

Born in Zvishavane and raised in Bulawayo, Orah, a fast-rising nightclub proprietor draws inspiration from businesswoman Rejoice Mafukidze (who runs Bulawayo’s largest Shisha cafés), who provided her with a life-changing opportunity.

Her journey mirrors a transformation from rags to riches as she recounts her rise from humble beginnings to successful entrepreneurship.

“At 32 years old, I was born in Shabani but grew up in Bulawayo. I entered the entertainment industry through Rejoice Mafukidze, my relative, who runs all the Shisha bars in Bulawayo, including the trending Tin Cup.

“She offered me a job, transitioning me from a full-time home-maker to a manager. Over time, I ascended to the role of general manager. I learned invaluable lessons from her and to this day, she remains my mentor and role model,” shared Orah.

After gaining extensive experience, Orah decided to venture out on her own.

“After three years of learning the ropes, I took the leap to open my own bars. Now, I own two establishments in Zvishavane, namely ManCave

Bar and Mist and Ice Hill Bar (Pagomo) situated atop the hill. I take pride in their classiness, making them among the finest in Zvishavane,” Orah revealed.

To her credit, the spots are incredibly popular in the mining town, enjoying high patronage from as far as Masvingo and Bulawayo.

With plans underway for further expansion, Orah stands as a beacon of women’s excellence in an industry often dominated by patriarchy.

“The industry hasn’t always been welcoming to women, given the challenges we face from unruly patrons. However, attitudes are shifting and

I’m increasingly met with friendliness and respect. Here in Zvishavane, despite encountering rowdy individuals, I assert myself in business. I am resilient and hardworking.”

She added that her next endeavour is to establish a presence in Masvingo CBD.

“The town should brace itself for Orah’s arrival,” she said. – @mthabisi_mthire
