Southern Mavericks in fine run

Southern region basketball league defending champions, Southern Mavericks continued their fine run in the regional basketball competition games that were played on Saturday at Khanyisile Sports Club.

 The Bulawayo league champions won two of their matches which they played on Saturday to maintain a clean record in games played so far. They have played four games. 

In their first match of the day, Southern Mavericks beat Legends 38-36 to register their third win of the season. 

In the second match, the defending champions made it four out of four after they beat Lakers 41-38 to continue their dominance in the southern region basketball circles. 

Other results from Khanyisile Sports Club on Saturday saw Lakers beat Highlanders 50-18, Superman beat Catch Them Young 26-12, Highlanders lost they second match against Legends 61-35. 

In other games played at Raylton Sports Club on the day, Falcons beat Warriors 91-78, Warriors in their second game beat Wolves 78-40 and Falcons won again against Wolves beating them 70-49. 

The league table as of the weekend games sees Lakers sitting on top with 10 points after six games, Mavericks are second with two games in hand and eight points followed by Falcons on seven points with two games in hand as well.

Wolves are in position four with seven points, in position five there is Voltrons with six points followed by Warriors on six points as well. Legends sit on position seven with five points, Masvingo Panthers on number eight with three points. 

The bottom two has Highlanders on three points in position nine and Victoria Falls, who have played only one game are sitting last with just one point. 

 Southern Mavericks head coach, Kudzai Mugezi said despite facing stiff competition on Saturday, he is happy they managed to cross the line. 

“I’m very happy with the performance of the players and also the technical staff and managers, a lot of work goes into the preparation for the games on and off the court and I believe we are doing great,” said Mugezi. 

He added: “Competition was stiff this weekend against Bulawayo Legends and Lakers but we managed to win both games, the games were thrilling and very competitive,” said Mugezi.

Bulawayo Basketball Association secretary general, Francis Dube said he hopes the teams from the city will go on and win the league as they will be gaining experience and exposure. 

“We are expecting that they probably win the Southern league and gain experience and improvement of fitness levels they also will be taking part in the BBA league soon,” said Dube. 

Mugezi also thanked teams for their great sportsmanship. 

“There was great sportsmanship and discipline from teams and I’m sure spectators are still wowed by the moments of extraordinary skill displayed this weekend,” he said. – @brandon_malvin
