I’M the sort of person who would just be content spending Valentine’s Day at home. Watch a movie, talk, laugh, popcorn at hand, a glass of Mazoe orange crush and I’m a perfectly happy soul. No pressure. I’m certain I’m not the only easy going person out there, but I know a significant number of those who would want to go out somewhere special, wear something a little over the top and make the most of what St Valentine died for.

Then there are those who like the outdoors, beautiful scenery, fresh air, perhaps some music – easy outside does it for them.

Probably you like to spice it up a little – a night out, somewhere fun and exciting. Maybe you want to step in the name of love and dance the night away.

Whatever persona you may have, looking good and appropriate wherever you are this Valentine’s Day will make a big difference.

If you’re like me, hoping to spend the day indoors with your partner, wearing those worn out jeans and your favourite t-shirt is not acceptable.

Make an effort to look good. A flattering blouse, a good pair of jeans, sandals, a good shirt or t-shirt will remind your partner why they fell in love with you.

If you’re going out for dinner or somewhere sophisticated, you may want to consider a couple of things.

Don’t dress to kill, dress to impress. Because you’re going to be sitting most of the time and staring into each other’s eyes exchanging sweet nothings, you want to wear something nice but comfortable so that you’re not distracted all night.

Ladies, don’t wear too short a dress. Besides having to pull it down all night, your thighs will make an awful amount of noise as they peel off the chair when you get up.

Gents, don’t outshine your woman by wearing too much. Wear a simple jacket over a slim fit shirt, a good pair of pants and those shoes you never wear to work will be perfect. The fragrance you wear will speak volumes of you. A man who smells good is priceless.

I’ve always thought wearing matching outfits was ‘cheesey’ but because it’s Valentine’s Day you’ll be forgiven.

If you decide to get in touch with nature, coordinated outfits will look cute on your pictures.

Depending on where you decide to go, a cotton t-shirt will be a life saver because cotton is absorbent and it’s really been hot of late.

Your deodorant will last all afternoon under cotton. Wear a pair of shoes with good grip, you don’t want to slip and fall as you take that romantic walk up the mountain or deep in the thicket. A pair of jeans or shorts would be appropriate.

For all my party people, that short dress you didn’t wear to dinner, wear it to the club, especially if your partner has two left feet.

You wouldn’t want him to be stepping on your dress all night long.

Otherwise, pair some torn boyfriend jeans with colourful heels, red perhaps, and a blouse. Don’t forget to go all out with the make-up, well, assuming your hair is always on point!

But if you’re going to Tocky Vibes show, lose the heels and wear a flat pair of shoes.

You don’t want to spoil the night whining about painful feet after the Mhai hit-maker has got you jumping up and down.

At the end of the day, what you decide to wear should not be a distraction to what the day should be about – love.

Put the ambiance of the day first.

Wherever you may be, style in the name of love. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Until next week, flaunt your pattern and style.
