Teachers to report for work Tuesday when schools open

Schools open tomorrow for the first term of the year.

Mrs Chikowore said although teachers were disgruntled with their remuneration, they would report for work when schools open. Civil servants are taking home an average salary of US$160 per month which is below the Povert Datum Line pegged at US$500.

“Although our members are not happy with their salaries, they will definitely be at work when schools open.

“I am happy to say that they listen to the leadership as we keep them updated with the latest information,” she said.

Mrs Chikowore said a meeting that was held last year indicated progress.
“We held a progressive meeting with Government on 20 December last year and we agreed that the government will come up with specific figures for the salaries and the break down of the allowances. That is why I see no reason why we should stop teachers from going to work,” said Mrs Chikowore. -Chronicle
