THREE people, two of them police officers, sustained serious injuries after a police truck they were travelling in side-swiped a Mazda pickup truck along Khami Road in Bulawayo on Thursday.

Bulawayo Chief Fire officer Mr Richard Petersen said the injured were critical.

One of the cars, driven by a police officer, lost two rear wheels in the accident which happened at about 12.13PM.

“I can confirm that a road traffic accident occurred along Khami road at 1213 hours on 23 November 2017. A ZRP Land Rover hit the left side of the load box of a Mazda pickup truck travelling in the same direction after it had encroached into the lane of the fast moving Mazda. The two vehicles were coming from the city centre towards Mpopoma suburb,” said Mr Peterson.

“The Land Rover rolled several times, losing its rear wheels in the process before it landed on its front wheels on the road.”

The victims are Mr Edward Ngulube (45), who was driving the Land Rover, Mr Edmore Pasi (46), a passenger and Mr Paul Nyadongo (34), the driver of the Mazda.

According to the rescuers, Mr Ngulube sustained haematoma on the forehead and a deep laceration on the right wrist and was also complaining of severe chest pains. Mr Pasi, who was a passenger in the police car sustained no visible injuries but complained of body pains and was rushed to hospital after medics feared he might have sustained internal injuries.

Mr Nyadongo had lacerations on the forehead and also complained of chest and back pains.

Mr Petersen said the two occupants of the Land Rover were rushed to Mater Dei Hospital while the driver of the Mazda was taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals. The Land Rover was extensively damaged but the Mazda had minor front damage. He urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads and refrain from speeding.

“I would like to urge motorists to drive at safe speeds and observe road traffic regulations,” Mr Petersen said.

Bulawayo Police spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango could not be reached for comment.
